The tests you have to take must appear in your study programme (in Esse3). If there is a case of tests taken irregularly, they will be considered invalid. For the compilation of the study plan, you can consult what is published on the Infostudenti portal.

Language skills required

Master’s Degree in European and International Studies (MEIS)

MEIS students are required to achieve a good working knowledge (B2) of a second foreign language (other than English) from those taught at the University.

If you do not have Italian citizenship, you are also required to pass an A2 level Italian language test.

Recognition of international certificates

Students who have a language certification (acknowledged at international level as well as by the University of Trento) can send the certificate to the Academic and Student Services of their Department, in order to be accredited the credits related to the exam, without the need to take the entrance test/language exam for the first or second language.

Master's Degree in International Security Studies (MISS)

Students registered from a.y. 2024/25

All students registered from a.y. 2024/25 have to do:

  • a specific English C1 language test that is delivered from the Department and not from CLA (English for International Studies);
  • a second Language level B2 test in a language to be chosen among German, French and Spanish.

If you do not have Italian citizenship, you are also required to pass an A2 level Italian language test.

English C1
  • For the English language only two certificates are recognized:
    • IELTS (no skills lower that 6 for B2 plus level, and 6.5 for C1 level);
    • TOEFL IBT (no skills lower than 23 for B2 plus level and 26 for C1 level);
  • You should have obtained your certificate no more than three years earlier than the beginning of your first academic year;
  • must be sent via the appropriate application during the opening periods specified by the Department;
  • must be in PDF format and legible.

Alternatively, if you completed a bachelor's or master's degree entirely in English and wrote the final dissertation in English you should forward proof of this (Degree Diploma plus documentation clearly stating the degree is entirely in English) to the Coordinator for Languages, Catherine Riley for approval.

Second language

The certificate:

  • must be sent via the appropriate application during the opening periods specified by the Department;
  • must be in PDF format and legible;
  • when there should be no expiry date, it will be considered valid for 5 years since the release date;
  • must be part of the list of certificates accepted by the University.

Alternatively, if you obtained your high school diploma, bachelor's or master's degree entirely in the second language in your study plan, you can present documentation (Diploma plus documentation clearly stating the Course was entirely in the second language) to the MISS Secretariat (sis@sis.unitn.it).

International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS)

If you do not have Italian citizenship, you are also required to pass an A2 level Italian language test.
