The tests you have to take must appear in your study programme (in Esse3). If there is a case of tests taken irregularly, they will be considered invalid.

Language skills required

Bachelor's Degree in Sociology

If you are enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology, you must pass a B1 level English language test to graduate.

Bachelor's Degree in Social Work

If you are enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, you must pass a B1 level English language test to graduate.

Bachelor's Degree in International Studies

If you are enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree in International Studies, you must pass the following language tests to graduate:

  • First year: passing a B1 level English language test;
  • Second year: passing one of the following educational activities, to be chosen:
  • Third year: passing a B1 level language test in a language of choice among French, Spanish, German (or another language for which you can present a B1 level or higher language certificate that demonstrates verified written and oral knowledge); 

If you demonstrate knowledge of the English language at a C1 or C2 level (by passing the test at CLA or by obtaining recognition of a language certificate) the first-year B1 English language requirements are also considered fulfilled, in addition to the second-year C1 or C2 English language requirements.
Furthermore, for the C2 level, in addition to the 6 mandatory credits for the second year, 2 credits are also recognised for the third-year optional subjects.

You can also take additional language tests or language tests at a higher level than the mandatory requirements and thus earn credits for the third-year optional subjects.

Master's Degree in Sociology and Social Research

If you are enrolled in a Master's Degree in Sociology and Social Research, you must pass a B2 level English language test to graduate.

You can also earn further credits by taking a language exam at the CLA in:

  • language tests for French, Spanish, and German at any language level;
  • language tests for English at a level higher than B2.

Recognition of Language Certificates

If you have a language certificate (internationally recognised and also by the Department of Sociology and Social Research), you can send the certificate to the Academic and Student Services Office of your Department for the recognition of the relevant credits without having to take the entry test/first or second language exam.
