Italian Sign Language (LIS) Course – A1 Basics
The Course
50 hours in total, including:
- 41 hours of basic LIS linguistic skills
- 9 hours on deafness with elements of Deaf culture
When
The course will take place at CLA from March 11 to May 27, 2026, on Wednesdays from 9:30 AM to 12:30 noon (some classes will be held on Thursdays from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, and 3 sessions will take place online in synchronous mode on Mondays from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM).
Contents
- Receptive and productive skills in LIS – A1 Basic level
- Introduction to and awareness of Deaf language and culture
Objectives
- Signed Comprehension (reception): ability to understand concrete information and the main points of very simple signed discourse on familiar and everyday topics.
- Signed Production (expression): ability to communicate using some frequent expressions and to engage in simple conversations.
- Ability to understand the fundamentals of Deaf culture and art.
Target Audience
The course is free of charge and is intended for students and staff members (PTA, scholarship holders, researchers) of the University of Trento.
Micro-credential (Open Badge)
At the end of the course, participants will receive a digitally certified micro-credential in the form of an Open Badge, attesting to the LIS skills acquired. To obtain the badge, attendance of at least 75% of the course is required.

- Dr. Filippo Calcagno, native Deaf LIS teacher, accredited and registered in the ENS national registry
- Prof. Francesco Pavani, professor of general psychology, expert in cognitive and neurocognitive processes in deafness
