Do you want to enrol in a language course and already have some foundation in the language you are interested in? If so, you will need to take an online placement test. This test is used to determine your current language level and direct you to the most suitable course for you.
If you are an absolute beginner, don't worry: you do not need to take the test and can enrol directly in A1a/A1 level courses.

How Does the Test Work?

  • Format: The test consists of multiple-choice questions.
  • Honesty: You must complete it by yourself, without the aid of books, grammar resources, or other people. The goal is to assess your actual skills.
  • Teacher Verification: During the first few days of the course, the teacher will assess your level and, if necessary, may advise you to switch to an easier or more advanced course.
  • Please Note:
    • For French, there is also a listening section, so you will need headphones.
    • Currently, the test is not available for Chinese, Portuguese, and Arabic.

Time and scoring

  • Duration: The time available varies depending on the language, but in any case, it does not last more than 50 minutes. You will see a timer on the screen.
  • Score Calculation:
    • Correct answer: positive score. The specific value is indicated next to each question.
    • Incorrect answer: deduction (negative score). The specific value is indicated at the beginning of the test for the selected language.
    • No answer: 0 points.

Students with Disabilities or Special Educational Needs (BES/DSA)

If you are entitled to extra time for taking exams, you can also request it for the placement test.

  • How to request it: Send an email to esamicla@unitn.it.
  • What to specify: Indicate the language of the test you are interested in (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, or Russian).
  • When to request it: You must send the request at least 5 working days before the date you intend to take the test.

How to Access the Test?

  • For UniTrento Students: Access the test using your university credentials (username and password).
  • For External or Partner Users:
    • Register for the Language Centre services by filling out the online application form. An Italian tax code (codice fiscale) is required.
    • Wait for an email from the CLA Office (within 5 working days of registration). They will provide instructions for accessing U-GOV CLA, taking the test, and/or enrolling in the courses.

When to Take the Test?

  • Flexibility: You can take the test whenever you want, even on the same day you enrol in the courses. However, we recommend doing it a little in advance.
  • Validity: The test is valid for 6 months.
  • Repetition: You can repeat the test only after two months from the date you took it.

What to Avoid During the Test?

Once the test has started, be very careful:

  • You cannot pause the test. The timer will continue to run.
  • You must not exit the test page. If you do, the session will be cancelled, the test will be invalidated, and you will not be able to start another one until two months have passed.

Start the test!

To take the placement test, you must access the University Language Centre's management system, U-Gov CLA. If you need help with the procedure, consult the guidelines available in the "DOWNLOAD BOX" (the file "U-GOV CLA - Studenti - CORSI CLA - marzo 2025" is a good starting point!).
